Bookmarked! I would agree with Daquan, networking is paramount. As a freelancer, I didn't see the level of work until I made a concerted effort to network in an efficient manner.

I've always had the mind set that you speak of in this article but I'm a new freelance designer and I'm still trying to make my first real dollars so I'm naturally on that project to project grind but I always day dream about later down the road and what can I do now to help me be more successful. Much thanks for the good read

Thank you mathew for such an inspiring article. I agree with most of the points raised especially about getting your name out there through any opportunity that arises...

Very interesting article. This argument is as old as the hills. Same problem was happening in print and now it's moved to the web. All these artists taking on these one off projects for practically no pay or, much worse, spec work, also brings down the entire industry. You are right you have to have be a business owner and look at yourself as building a business. That's how you get the clients that can actually afford the work and appreciate the design and the hard work that goes into it. The clients that go to sites like 99designs typically don't get how important good design is to their bottom line. The freelancers need to teach them.

Definitely a great read. Gives me and should give more freelancers motivation to get out there and in peoples face online and off. I don't do too many job boards, though my main income comes from craigslisting. Yes it's spotty at times and is project by project, but I've acquired a number of strong business relationships by being persistent in my emails and that's what it's all about. No matter what you do job boards or not if you're persistent you will definitely reach your goal.
