Sometimes you reference objects on css or js files. You can “pre-load” those objects in order to reduce the time needed to render your page. It’s better explained here: http://diogomelo.net/blog/11/improve-page-load-time-performance-pre-loading-images

Hey, I like the “css sprites” stuff. Never heard of that, although I have used css positioning of a background image for roll over effects and css sprites looks like a variation of that, but the idea of combining various little images into a single image and then just showing parts here and there to reduce http requests….cool, cool, cool!
