No-one seems to have said that digital publication relies on software, and software becomes obsolete and requires translation into new software; whereas to read writing you just have to learn to read, once.

When we moved from stone tablets to papyrus and paper I'm sure there were those that said:
- but stone can't be burned, or smudged!
- paper requires killing valuable trees!
- paper is fragile and won't be there for future generations!
- we wouldn't have had cave paintings without stone!
Long live stone! I'll take an iPad please...

The print is dead topic has been around for quite some years, yet you still get tons of flyers and advertising in printed forms in your mail, local magazine booklets with special and plenty of other paper (which usually land right in the garbage bin), but the biggest and in my opinion most important print sector that I believe will never disappear and cannot be substituted with any e-form whatsoever is packaging. You will always need labels, boxes, hand tags, paper or plastic bags with lovely prints gift bags, postcards greeting cards and the list goes on and on. I do think that newspaper lost grounds, but I am one to prefer to hold a magazine in my hands and read it instead of a e-paper/book or PDF. When in the 70/80s the computers took over handwritten or typewriter written paper, everybody speculated that paper will disappear and electronic paper will take over. Studies later showed that the paper used actually increased.

I think its undeniable that Print isn't going to the be the major medium for content delivery in the future, and in fact isn't already.

To think that print is dead is to simple. It isn't a black and white issue. A start can shine bright without being the brightest.

Look at 8 tracks and vinyls. If we were so black and white with technology, you wouldn't see any new distrubtions on vinyle.

I like to look at it as just another avenue to convey a message, while keeping the old still available. As you mentioned people goto the newspaper for information that is different then what they seek on the net. Print will specialize more.

Good post

Great article!

Let's not forget that print is synonymous to evolution. Better phrased; it depends on it. We started with cave painting, papyrus, parchment, wooden typefaces and stone prints. Because print is and has always been about communicating. And communication evolves and so will print. Look where we are now! Ebooks etc. are part of that. Thanks to print. It's not a old fashioned trade/profession. The print industry is used to embrace new technologies in order to survive and succeed. If there is a good reason to turn paperless, the print industry will be the first to do so.

One thing I've seen many times and I've experienced myself, is that with PDF, you can get almost tons of books in no time. This means that you'll never read even one of'em, cause you always feel like beated by the amount of unread books in front of you.

But with real paper, you can't afford enough place to hold that amount of books. Thus you can get sure that you'll read all of them some day.

Thanks for this great article. You echo my sentiments exactly. 16 years ago when I started working in libraries print was dead because of CD's, We have a long long way to go!
