Thanks Michael, ironically I just ditched the template featuring Cambria in the interest of finding a WP theme that allowed me more flexibility for selling advertising.

I guess you can say money trumps design sometimes...

It's unclear to me how anyone can work on windows with lcd monitor without cleartype enabled. IMHO, monitors and especially cheaper models with TN screens, require some sort of anti-aliasing to make them readable, regardless of the font.

Bill, thanks for the heads up. Wish you guys could offer Nyala and Segoe UI, but we can't ask for everything :) And you have the Cariadings font, which is REALLY obscure. Had I known of this link, I would have incorporated some of the info in the article. Thanks!

Michael - a very comprehensive article indeed. Ascender Corp distributes these Microsoft to users and developers who need a proper license to them. More information is available here: http://www.ascendercorp.com/catalog/microsoft/clear-type-font-collection/

Ilia, to my admittedly inexpert eye, the differences between Arial and SegoeUI are small but important. Maybe it's just "Arial burnout," but I much prefer the SegoeUI appearance to Arial. That's of course with ClearType enabled; Segoe looks awful without anti-aliasing. (Calibri, on the other hand, looks almost charmingly primitive in its unaliased state...) Steve, I absolutely love Consolas. I've switched all the monospace displays on my computer from Courier New, which I hate.

Very thorough article, great stuff.

I've experimented with some of the "C" fonts but never found them necessary, and the size issue kept me from using them. I have started using Segoe more often though. In fact, I often now start with it, and only switch back to Arial if it doesn't work out for some reason. The two are close enough that unless the design really needs a particular font look I know that I can put them in the stack and my layout will be fine, whether the user has Segoe or not.
