Really interesting article, when designing for the web it’s important to keep an overview and remember that your site can be viewed across the world. Using Unicode Standard and compatible character encoding make a big difference.

I especially agree with the section on Culture and Symbolism. Not only do certain symbols fail to resonate abroad, they can even portray negative images.

Also important: a competent and creative translator. Cultural references, metaphors, and tone must be properly adapted or ‘transcreated’. A French to English translator would write in a more familiar tone for an anglophone audience. An English to French translator would delete your baseball expressions and create something which would make sense to an ordinary francophone.
