8 Excellent WordPress SEO Plugins

WordPress is one the most popular tools for publishing content on the web. Everything from e-commerce websites to blogs can be developed using WordPress. Additionally, the WordPress community has built up a huge offering of free themes and plugins to make it easy for newcomers to get content published on the web quickly and easily.

However, just posting content on the web isn’t enough for many; attracting people to your site is part science, part art — and many WordPress plugins help you do just that. This is a listing of top-notch WordPress plugins for SEO to improve your WordPress site’s search engine rankings.

1. SEO Rank Reporter

SEO Rank Reporter

This WordPress SEO plugin allows you to track certain keywords in your site, and then issues you a report every 3 days (with all sorts of pretty graphs to boot). The plugin will also notify you via email whenever certain keywords experience major changes in search engine ranking.

2. All in One SEO Pack

All in One SEO Pack

Any basic research on SEO plugins for WordPress will lead you to All in One SEO Pack. It is the most popular solution for your WordPress site’s search engine optimization. This plugin automatically optimizes your WordPress site for search engines by generating meta tags and helping you optimize web page titles. Advanced users are given the ability to customize post titles, descriptions, URL structures and tags for each post.

3. SEO Ultimate

SEO Ultimate

SEO Ultimate is a suite of tools for, well, ultimate SEO. It has a feature called Canonicalizer, which extends WordPress’s native canonical features to ensure that web spiders are pointed to the primary post in the case of web pages with the same content, but different URLs. It has a built-in robot.txt editor (one of the five web files that will enhance your site) that will allow you to easily set up this file for optimal search engine indexing. It works well with All in One SEO Pack, allowing you to import meta-data from it if you wanted to switch to SEO Ultimate.

4. SEO Content Control

SEO Content Control

This nifty plugin helps you identify weak content in your site. For example, many WordPress owners forget to include descriptions of their categories, which is a potential point of improvement for enhancing your search engine rankings. SEO Content Control helps you easily identify these potentially troublesome areas.

5. SEO Friendly Image

SEO Friendly Image

Optimizing images for search engines is often neglected; but when done right, you increase their semantic value, accessibility, and search engine indexability, especially for image searches. This WordPress SEO plugin automatically updates your images with alt and title attributes.

6. SEO Smart Links

SEO Smart Links

SEO Smart Links is a WordPress SEO plugin that automatically links keywords and phrases in your blog posts based on previous pages and posts. SEO Smart Links gives you the ability to set up your own unique keywords and sets of matching URLs. It also allows you to set nofollow attributes and open links in new browser windows or browser tabs. A very convenient way to save time, learn a bit about SEO best practices and interlink blog posts.

7. Google XML Sitemaps

Google XML Sitemaps

This WordPress plugin is able to generate an XML sitemap that will assist search engine spiders in crawling and indexing your WordPress site. XML Sitemaps reveals the structure of your site’s content in a transparent way for search engines. Google XML Sitemaps also includes support for Bing, Yahoo!, Ask.com, and MSN, notifying them every time you create a post.

8. Platinum SEO Pack

Platinum SEO Pack

This SEO plugin for WordPress is loaded with plenty of features, including automatically generating meta tags, helping you optimize page and post titles for search engines, and aiding you in avoiding duplicate content (one of the ways to improve SEO of sites you design).

Conclusion

These WordPress plugins will give your WordPress site a complete SEO overhaul. Installing them and getting to understand each plugin’s inner workings may take some time, but it is worth it to know how each plugin can benefit your site. When used correctly, your content will be more visible, potentially attracting additional traffic consisting of your target audience.

This is a good article about Seo packs for WordPress. However it fails to point out weather you can use some of them with others. For instance it seems like some of them only target certain areas while others focus on the details, like keyword impresions, ect. I would like to know which ones get along and which ones may not.

Good list of SEO plugins – I’m a big fan of all in one seo pack and google xml sitemap. Another obvious but useful one to add is the various Google Analytics plugins available.

Any reason you left Yoast’s WordPress SEO off of this list? I recently installed it on 2 of my sites (after removing All In One SEO Pack) and have seen a nice increase in organic traffic from Google and Yahoo.

This is a great succinct list on SEO WordPress plugins. One question: Do you use both All in One SEO Plugin as well as the Platinum SEO Plugin at the same time?

Crafu

February 17th, 2011

None of the SEO plugins has had as dramatic an effect as switching my WP Theme to Thesis.
It’s light years ahead of any plugin and totally worth the money in my opinion.

Syed Balkhi

February 17th, 2011

I was going to say great collection until I saw that you missed the greatest of great WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast. It can replace 3 plugins in the list by itself. Platinum SEO, All in One SEO, and XML Sitemap.

Also reading from the SEO Smartlinks reviews on the WordPress repository, the plugin seems to be broken for many users. And if you want a working version, you have to buy the paid one.

February 17th, 2011

Bill Robbins

I have to agree that Yoast’s WordPress SEO should be considered. I replaced All In One SEO Pack with it, made no other changes and saw my traffic from search engines double in about 3 months.

Erik

February 17th, 2011

Thanks for the list.

I have still a question: is it possible/preferrable to use multiple SEO Plugins at the same time (like Yoast en All In One SEO)?

Trying out the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin after reading the comments…. Only too short to say something about the performance.

Hi

I was a regular user of several SEO plugins (like All In One SEO Pack, Google XML Sitemaps, etc.) but since I’ve discovered Yoast WP Seo, I strictly use it and only it :)

It’s the only one which permits to use metas title and descriptions on all taxonomies (custom or not) and custom post types.

On the other hand, it isn’t compatible with older versions (only with WP 3.0+)

Hi Guys and Gals,

Thanks for the feedback, I love hearing about what you guys use to optimize your content. Don’t get me wrong, Yoast seems like a great tool. This list is far from comprehensive as there are hundreds of SEO WordPress plugins. I use All in One SEO Pack and XML Sitemap to accomplish what Yoast does. I’ve also had some compatibility issues with Yoast’s Sitemaps and Category Tags, but this doesn’t mean that Yoast can’t help your WordPress site’s SEO!

To my knowledge I believe that the only plugins that can’t work together are “Platinum SEO” and “All in One SEO” (like @Jennier mentioned). They both essentially do the same thing, so it is a matter of preference. If I find anything else on the subject matter I will update you guys.

@Suresh I didn’t know that SEO Friendly Images could potentially hurt your ranking. Thanks, I’m going to look more in to this!

Let me just add my voice to the chorus that considers not listing the Yoast SEO plugin as a grievous error of omission. Among doing what most of these other plugins do, but doing it better, it also provides a much better XML sitemap generator than predecessors.

Dallas

February 25th, 2011

Sorry to just be an echo bunny but Yoast SEO really does cover a lot of this list in a single plugin. I hear there are still a few issues but it really is like 10 plugins in one: my favorite components:

Duplicate content management
Ping google, yahoo, bing, ask.com after every post
Exclude whole taxonomies (eg author, date, category)
Titles templates for homepage, post, page, category, tag, author etc etc including title, exerpt and metatags
Choose to stop creating/indexing/following/caching of non-content pages/links such as search result, admin pages, unwanted archives, comments etc.
Removing “category” base from permalinks (eg dogs.com/breed/husky vs dogs.com/category/breed/husky) not just good for SEO: much more emotionally satisfying too!
RSS Header/Footer html to put links back to your blog in your feeds.

This plugin has heaps of options and takes a bit of understanding, but it really seems the most powerful available from what I’ve seen, and even without perfect settings most people will find it a great help.

Its saved my behind telling me my site was invisible to search engines more than once:
and its free!

Nice information . Once I used a SEO plugins . But it didn’t work as I expected. It used to suggest keywords boringly. For choosing proper keywords , I like to have faith on my mind .However , the Google XML Sitemap Plugins is too good .But it stopped responding for me since long and i could not fix the bug. After that , I used to create it manually without any style-sheet. Now , I am just taking the matter differently .Now ,I use my feed as sitemap and it works well for me .However … ‘LIKE UR POST’ and Praise ‘UR EFFORT’. Keep Blogging :D

Hi Matt, Kevin Stacey here..

First off, this post is extremely thorough! I don’t see too many bloggers doing into detail like you have…that’s the mark of a blogger who knows his plugins. For optimization, free plugins like All in One SEO Pack are really great as it lays down the basic SEO foundation for a WordPress site, but every blog is different and nothing works best for everyone.

I always suggest looking at a side-by-side comparison of the best seo plugins for WordPress in order to make an informed decision of what the best plugin is for that blogger and their website’s specific needs.

Here’s my most recent write-up on the subject:

SEO Pressor vs Easy WP SEO vs Scribe SEO
http://www.bestseopluginforwordpress.com/wordpress-seo/the-best-seo-plugin-for-wordpress/

You also don’t want to overload/bog down WordPress resources with too many bulky plugins as well.

Great article btw…I’ll be referencing this post on my main blog.

Really helpful list Matt – thank you.

I’m currently using Yoast’s All In One on some new sites and am delighted with it.

One thing that would be really useful would be a csv import for All In One that allowed you to import categories and their descriptions easily – it would be a great way of seeding, for example, a directory style site.

What a great post with valuable information I am already applying to my WordPress websites.

I have a question about adding header meta data keywords. Many SEO experts say that theses are no longer used by Google. Is this correct? If this is the case how does Google prioritize its keyword search and recognition for multiple keywords.

For example adwords monthly keyword category searches for “wordpress seo” are low while separate searches for seo and wordpress are high.
